01

The Situation

Heritage audiences mix locals, tourists, families, and scholars — often in the same room. Static panels cannot carry atmosphere; unstructured 360 content loses the narrative thread and exhausts casual visitors.

02

Goal & Expectations

Create a multilingual immersive gallery where scene flow and hotspot layers deliver clarity and mood. Measure depth and completion so curators know what held attention beyond entrance counts.

03

Challenges

The hard parts were rarely just creative. They were floor reality, feasibility and the people who had to run it live.

  • Narrative vs. wander

Freedom to explore had to coexist with a recommended story arc for visitors who wanted guidance without a human guide.

  • Multilingual parity

Languages could not feel like afterthoughts. Hotspot depth and tone had to match across locales without breaking layout on kiosk and web.

  • Venue pacing

Installations ran all day with mixed lighting and noise. UI had to remain readable and calm for long dwell without staff intervention.

04

Where I Came In

I came in to structure scene flow and hotspot taxonomy with curators before capture schedules locked. I worked with interpretation writers to tier content into glance, story, and scholar layers.

05

Approach

Mapped a gentle default path with optional branches into artifact detail. Designed language switching that preserved visitor position in the tour.

06

What We Built

Visitors moved through cultural spaces, opened stories in their language, and felt presence without confusion. Curators gained funnel views on depth and completion, not just ticket sales proxies.

07

Other Teams Involved

Curatorial board, interpretation and translation, and venue AV for display integration.

08

On the Floor

Tuned brightness and kiosk height with venue ops. Set idle attract loops respectful of quiet gallery zones versus festival pop-up installs.

09

End Result

Heritage installations delivered measurable immersive narratives with reusable scene and reporting structure for future exhibits.

10

Final Thought

Heritage work asks you to get out of the way of the story. I still think about a child and a scholar stopping at the same hotspot for different layers — that tiered design is why I love this category.

For teams who want the build detail: the experience drew on the tools and patterns below. The story above is what visitors and stakeholders felt on the floor.
