The Situation
On loud exhibition aisles, touch alone rarely stops traffic. Brands wanted a moment that felt instant and shareable — something people noticed peripherally and walked over to try without a long explanation.
Goal & Expectations
Ship a camera-driven booth where presence or simple gesture triggers a branded reactive display, with fallbacks when lighting or crowd conditions are imperfect. Tag interactions for post-event reporting.
Challenges
The hard parts were rarely just creative. They were floor reality, feasibility and the people who had to run it live.
Floor lighting chaos
Overhead spots, shadows, and passing crowds confused naive vision setups. The booth needed tolerant detection and graceful degradation.
Throughput at peak
Groups arrived in bursts. Sessions had to reset fast, invite the next visitor, and avoid queues blocking the aisle.
Brand tone vs. gimmick
The reaction had to feel on-brand for professional shows, not like a carnival mirror unless the brand explicitly wanted that energy.
Where I Came In
I joined to design the visitor flow — attract, trigger, reward, reset — and to specify vision fallbacks after testing in imperfect lighting. I worked with creative on the reactive moment people would photograph.
Approach
Kept gestures simple and visible from a distance. Built a clear idle attract loop and staff cues for when to invite people in versus let self-serve run.
What We Built
Visitors stepped in, triggered the experience with a wave or presence, and saw an immediate branded visual response worth sharing. Staff managed peak bursts without rebooting systems.
Other Teams Involved
Brand activation agency, event production for power and sightlines, and creative for motion design tied to campaign assets.
On the Floor
Recalibrated camera exposure during move-in and opening morning as hall lighting changed. Placed floor markers for optimal trigger zone without blocking egress.
End Result
Exhibition deployments delivered consistent reactive booth moments with interaction and completion analytics despite real floor conditions.
Final Thought
Gesture booths are hospitality with a camera — the smile when the screen responds instantly is the metric. I still tweak attract loops obsessively because on an aisle, you get one second of peripheral vision to earn the walk-over.
