The Situation
Cardiology conversations hinge on decisions along the care journey — presentation, intervention, outcomes — but linear decks flatten branching reality. Visitors disengage when the story does not match their patient population.
Goal & Expectations
Build a step-through pathway explorer staff and visitors could follow together, with branch points that match real clinical dialogue. Measure which stages earned the most attention at ACC and ESC.
Challenges
The hard parts were rarely just creative. They were floor reality, feasibility and the people who had to run it live.
Branching without losing the thread
Multiple pathways risked spaghetti navigation. Stages needed clear titles and an always-visible sense of “where we are” in the journey.
Presenter jumps
Reps had to skip to a specific decision point mid-conversation without rebooting the experience or embarrassing themselves in front of KOLs.
Clinical sensitivity
Visuals and language had to respect patient context and regional practice differences without oversimplifying to marketing slogans.
Where I Came In
I came in to map the pathway structure with medical education — stage names, branch logic, and analytics on stage depth. I observed booth rehearsals to see which jumps presenters requested under time pressure.
Approach
Designed stages as short readable chapters with explicit branch labels. Built presenter shortcuts and a visitor-friendly default path for unattended moments.
What We Built
Visitors walked a care journey step by step; staff joined to deepen or skip to the moment that matched the cardiologist’s question. The screen held the shared map both sides could point at.
Other Teams Involved
Cardiology education, medical affairs for clinical review, and creative for patient-journey visual language.
On the Floor
Tested touch flows on booth panels at standing height. Aligned timeout and attract loop with neighboring interactive stations at ACC and ESC.
End Result
ACC and ESC floors used a shared pathway explorer with stage-level engagement reporting after each congress.
Final Thought
Patient pathways are empathy tools for HCP conversations — they externalize the journey so two experts can argue productively. I remember a presenter skipping straight to outcomes and the visitor saying “that is my clinic” — that is the win.
