The Situation
HIMSS Global draws wide international traffic with uneven English comfort and very short booth visits. A dense product wall overwhelms; a single demo station becomes a bottleneck within minutes of doors opening.
Goal & Expectations
Build a self-guided showcase that answers buyer questions in a logical order and works unattended. Support reps when they join, without requiring them for every first touch.
Challenges
The hard parts were rarely just creative. They were floor reality, feasibility and the people who had to run it live.
Global audience, local patience
Visitors scanned for relevance fast. Navigation had to signal “you are in the right place” immediately and avoid US-centric assumptions in structure.
Portfolio breadth
Multiple product lines competed for screen space. The showcase needed clear zones without feeling like a catalog dump.
Proof after the show
Leadership wanted engagement by product area, not vanity metrics from passing foot traffic.
Where I Came In
I was asked to architect the showcase IA and touch flows before content lock. I interviewed field teams from two regions to learn which questions repeated on the global floor.
Approach
Structured the experience around buyer intents — fit, proof, next step — with modular content blocks reusable across zones. Designed for quick reset and obvious home navigation.
What We Built
Visitors explored product areas at their own pace, opened detail when a line matched their role, and left with clearer fit signals. Staff could deep-link into a zone when a conversation started mid-screen.
Other Teams Involved
Global marketing for story priority, regional reps for question validation, and agency for visual execution.
On the Floor
Aligned kiosk height and viewing angles with booth build. Verified touch calibration after overnight power cycles during multi-day exhibit.
End Result
HIMSS Global ran a steady self-serve showcase with post-show engagement breakdowns by product zone.
Final Thought
Global shows teach humility — your clever navigation means nothing if a tired buyer cannot find “start.” I carry those field interviews into every showcase IA: start with their questions, not our org chart.
