The Situation
ESC mixes digital congress moments with live booth conversations. Cardiology stories branch by audience — interventional, imaging, policy — but fixed slide orders fight the room you actually have.
Goal & Expectations
Deliver a presentation system that adapts in the moment across digital and physical contexts. Track which story branches reps and visitors actually used.
Challenges
The hard parts were rarely just creative. They were floor reality, feasibility and the people who had to run it live.
Branching without chaos
Too many paths create presenter anxiety. Modules needed a small set of clear entry points and trustworthy wayfinding back to the main arc.
Short attention windows
Booth stops were brief. Every module had to deliver value in under a minute while still supporting longer deep dives when interest held.
Cross-format consistency
Visual and narrative consistency had to hold whether the screen was a booth panel or a congress digital channel.
Where I Came In
I joined to define the modular story map and presenter controls before ESC content freeze. I ran working sessions with reps to learn which branches they reached for in real cardiology conversations.
Approach
Built a module library with shared design language and explicit “recommended paths” for common audience types. Kept touch navigation large and legible for standing use.
What We Built
Presenters opened the branch that matched the cardiologist in front of them, stitched modules live, and closed with a coherent message. Visitors exploring alone followed guided paths without feeling lost.
Other Teams Involved
Cardiology brand team, congress digital producers, and creative agency for visual system.
On the Floor
Validated touch latency and screen bezels on booth hardware during setup. Synced idle content with neighboring displays to avoid visual clash in tight ESC layouts.
End Result
ESC teams presented with flexible branching flows and received engagement views on which modules carried the congress.
Final Thought
Dynamic presentation is less about fancy transitions and more about confident wayfinding. I still use the ESC rep feedback — “I need to get to the outcome slide in two taps” — as a design test on every modular deck.
